A gemstone houserooted in Ceylon

Sri Lanka has produced the world's finest sapphires for two thousand years. Our work is to find the stones worth that reputation and present them honestly.

The House

Built at the source, not the showroom

Krystox began at the Saturday market in Ratnapura, buying single stones from the families who dig them. That has not changed: we still buy in person, from people we know, in the towns where the gravel is washed.

What we add is judgement. Perhaps one stone in forty is worth cutting to our standard, and perhaps one in four of those survives grading once it comes back from the lapidary.

Ethical sourcing

An artisanal industry, licensed and small-scale

Sri Lanka's gem trade is unusual: mining is licensed by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, mechanised extraction is tightly restricted, and most pits are worked by hand by teams of six to ten people who share in the find.

We buy directly from those syndicates and from the dealers who represent them. No stone enters the collection without a traceable chain from the pit to the parcel.

Certification

Independent reports, complete disclosure

Every gemstone is submitted to an independent laboratory — GIA, GRS, SSEF, Gübelin, AIGS or the NGJA — before it is listed. The report number is published on the stone's page.

Treatment is disclosed in full. Where a stone has been traditionally heated, we say so plainly; where it is unheated, the report says so and the price reflects it.
